MEGAPTERA

Interviews index

THIS INTERVIEWED WAS MADE IN 1998 FOR THE 3RD ISSUE
MEGAPTERA is an emblematic project of the Death-Industrial scene. It’s may be one of the most significative band of this dark mournfull music. Started in 1991 by Magnus Petterson & Mikael Svensson, joined the same year by Peter Nyström, Megaptera released in 1992 the “Near Death” tape on Sound Source & “Songs from Massive darkness” Lp on Vynil attack, both being CMI sub-labels. During the work of the latter Magnus left the project. In 1994 the first CD “Beyond the shadow” was produced by Italian Fluxus N2. In 1995 Mikael left Peter alone who is since this time helped by another Magnus Sundström (this one). In 1996 Art Konkret from germany released the CD “Disease”. 1998 is the year of the awakening with loads of releases for Peter as well as his 4 side- projects: Each Dawn I Die, Instant Cold Commando, Negru Voda & Obscene Noise Korporation. So after this brief story let’s start the interview with Peter.
How do you see the evolution of MEGAPTERA during all these years, becoming a solo project and through the different productions you've done?
I don’t see an evolution at all. I’m still making music the same way as before; and I’ll probably continue with that. Becoming alone is both positive & negative. You can just do things, without asking anyone but sometimes It feels like I should need someone to ask, But It’s things that I don’t think of.

What do you think of the re-releasing of “Near Death” Sound Source Tape by Cat's Heaven?
I think it’s good! I really like those tracks. It’s the real pure MEGAPTERA Sound. Experimenting with very small equipment to squeeze the energy out of the machines. We had a lot of fun when recorded those tracks.

Can you tell us more about the 2 CD project planned on Vuz/Slaughter?
The main reason why it hasn’t been released yet is some money problems. I don’t know if Holger & Marco still are doing this together but I Think so. I don’t know either when it will be out, But It can take some time. The artwork isn’t planned yet, But I do Know that It will be in some kind of box. The future will tell.

You've taken some samples from The Exorcist III on “Disease”, what are your favorite films? Have they some influence on you, in your way of composing?
The monologue from Excorcist III was so perfect for the sound that I was working on at that time, so I simply had to use it on the CD. I don’t have any special favorite movies and I don’t have them so much anymore for inspiration. Well I think I can mention “The silence of the lambs” & “Millenium”. They still give me the creaps.

What about all your projects on Fever Pitch, Vuz (who should release the long delay 3 cd since problem with Anomalous Rec.), Slaughter, CMI (How are your relation with this national label?),...?
The main problems with smaller labels is that they maybe can’t release a production as fast as wanted. But I understand them. I really admire all those labels, that works almost more for their burning interest in the music, than for the money. I really admire Slaughter that could have the MLP “Deep Inside” out in just 3 months!!! Quite impressing. The relation with CMI is good I’m honored to be featured on “the absolute supper”. It’s great. Maybe I’ll do something there in the future.

What do you think of both compilations “Death Odors” I & II in which you're featured?
The best pure Death-Industrial compilations ever!!! They are great.

How do you approach the music of each of your projects NEGRU VODA, INSTANT COLD COMMANDO, EACH DAWN I DIE, OBSCENE NOISE CORPORATION?
I sometimes do music that is too far away from the sound of MEGAPTERA, so If I think that the music is worth anything I release it as another name.

What would be your most wanted wish as a musician?
I just want to make music as long as I think it’s fun. Releasing records is a dream I always had since I started to listen to Electronic music way back in ‘84

Do you beleive in the EEC and common money?

Have you already experienced live performances? How was it? When?
I have performed twice. First time was in Rostock 96/11/16, on the ship Stubnitz. It was funnier to meet people & discuss music than to perform. I guess I’m not a live act. The other time was the 29th of November in Stockholm together with Raison d’être, Sanctum & Mental Destruction. This time I enjoyed It more.

What are your main influences? Is there some recent events that have given you the mood for doing a track?
No particulary. I haven’t been thinking so much lately of new music but when I do, I’m sure that It’s some special event that influences me. I don’t have any main influences.

What kind of animal would represent Megaptera?
A whale of course.

Do you see your work as reflection or personnal view on human kind status of live?
I see my work as a mirror of this sick world that the human race has created and are now trying to destroy. Quite concerning.

Anything to add?
MEGAPTERA have a Mini LP out called “Deep Inside” which can be ordered from me or Slaughter. A 4 tracks Mini CD is out on Fever Pitch called “Beautiful Chaos”, “The curse of the Scarecrow” (CD) is out on Relapse. The Negru Voda/ Third Eye split tape on Slaughter will be released on CD in June on Crowd Control Activities. The Negru Voda CD will be out on Old Europa Café.
